South Carolina is a southeastern U.S. state known for its shoreline of subtropical beaches and marshlike sea islands. Human history in South Carolina are more than 10,000 years old. Its first ancestors evolved to form many Native American tribes, the largest being the Catawba and the Cherokee. Europeans arrived in South Carolina in 1521 when Spanish Sailors sought to colonize the region. Their attempt failed, as well as a French attempt in 1562. The first permanent settlement in the state eventually became the city of Charleston. Coastal Charleston is a historic city, defined by pastel-colored houses, Old South plantations and Fort Sumter, where the Civil War’s opening shots were fired. To the north is the Grand Strand, a roughly 60-mile stretch of beachfront known for golf courses and the vacation town Myrtle Beach. South Carolina is called "The Palmetto State".

FUN FACT: Charleston is home to one of the oldest trees in the Country. Outside the city of Charleston resides one of the country’s oldest living trees — The Angel Oak. Located on the beautiful Johns Island, this live oak is estimated to be around 500 years old and counting. This is truly one of the most amazing sights to see while visiting Charleston. The limbs of the tree sprawl across more than 187 feet and stands at a height of 66.5 feet.

The First to Secede. South Carolina played a major role in the Civil War. The city of Charleston is actually where the first shots of the war rang out as Citadel cadets opened fire on a Union ship entering the harbor to bring supplies to soldiers at Fort Sumter. Later in the war, Fort Sumter would become a major setting for several battles between Union and Confederate troops. Although much of the conflict itself took place in South Carolina, many people don’t realize that South Carolina was actually the first state to secede before the battles broke out.

Industrial outputs include textile goods, chemical products, paper products, machinery, automobiles, automotive products and tourism. Major agricultural outputs of the state are tobacco, poultry, cotton, cattle, dairy products, soybeans, hay, rice, and swine. Many large corporations have moved their locations to South Carolina such as Boeing, SCANA, Sonoco Products and ScanSource.

South Carolina has an estimated 6800 homeowners associations (HOA) with over 1,370,000+ residents living in them.
