Information and Facts about Nevada.

The name "Nevada" comes from the Spanish adjective Nevada, meaning "snow-covered" or "snowy". The state takes its name from the Nevada Territory, which in turn was named for the Sierra Nevada. Nevada is officially known as the "Silver State" because of the importance of silver to its history and economy. Nearly $400 million in silver ore was generated at the time by the Comstock Lode. Cattle ranching and mining are other major economic activities in Nevada. Nevada achieved statehood in 1864.

FUN FACT: Nevada is home to "Area 51". This area is a highly classified United States Air Force (USAF) facility within the Nevada Test and Training Range. Area 51 has become a focus of modern conspiracy theories due to its secretive nature and connection to classified aircraft research. Theories include the storage, examination, and reverse engineering of crashed alien spacecraft, including material supposedly recovered at Roswell, the study of their occupants, and the manufacture of aircraft based on alien technology. Area 51 has been portrayed in numerous TV shows and films since the 1950's. The surrounding area is a popular tourist destination, including the small town of Rachel on the "Extraterrestrial Highway".

Hoover (Boulder) Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. Constructed between 1931 and 1936, during the Great Depression, it was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over 100 lives. Hoover Dam is as tall as a 60-story building. It was the highest dam in the world when it was completed in 1935. Its base is as thick as two football fields are long. Each spillway, designed to let floodwater pass without harming the dam itself, can handle the volume of water that flows over Niagara Falls. The amount of concrete used in building it was enough to pave a road stretching from San Francisco to New York City.

Las Vegas is the most populous city in Nevada. Following World War II, lavishly decorated hotels, gambling casinos, and big-name entertainment became synonymous with Las Vegas. Some of the state's largest employers are in Vegas and are casinos like Wynn Las Vegas, MGM Grand, Aria Resort, Mandalay Bay and Caesars Palace just to name a few. In fiscal year 2022 Nevada casinos brought in US$10.7 billion in gaming revenue and another US$15.7 billion in non-gaming revenue. Nevada has by far the most hotel rooms per capita in the United States.

Sports teams the Vegas Golden Knights NHL hockey team who won the Stanley Cup in 2023, and the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League are Nevada's professional teams. Super Bowl LVIII will be held at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada in 2024.
